Как я понимаю, ClosedInterval(lo, hi) представляет все строки s такой, что

lo <= s <= hi

а также HalfOpenInterval(lo, hi) представляет все строки s такой, что

lo <= s < hi

где <= а также < определяются лексикографическим порядком строк, т.е. сравнивают символы один за другим, пока не будет найдена разница.

Например "QED" < "T" < "WTF" так как Q < T < W, но "F" < "QED" так какF < Q, Следовательно

HalfOpenInterval("QED" , "WTF").contains("T") == true
HalfOpenInterval("QED" , "WTF").contains("F") == false

А также "QED" < "QSF" так как Q == Q а также E < S, но "QAF" < "QED" так как Q == Q а также A < E, Следовательно

HalfOpenInterval("QED" , "WTF").contains("QSF") == true
HalfOpenInterval("QED" , "WTF").contains("QAF") == false

Это должно объяснить все ваши результаты теста.

В заключение,

let clampedString0 = aThroughHHalfOpen.clamp ( tThroughXHalfOpen )

пустой интервал, потому что "A"..<"H" а также "T"..<"X" не имеет общих точек. Пустой интервал может быть представлен как HalfOpenInterval(dummy, dummy) для любого значения dummy,
