end

И ошибка:

NoMethodError in CompaniesController#index

undefined method `+' for nil:NilClass

Ваш params[:sort] возвращается nil,

Вы можете исправить это, например, проверив свои параметры:

@companies = Company.scoped
if params[:sort].present? && params[:direction].present?
  @companies = @companies.order(params[:sort] + ' ' + params[:direction])
end
