A blacklist is a list of entities that are banned from some access or action (entities not in the blacklist are authorized, including unknown entities).

Blacklist is a less secure but also less restricted approach than whitelist. It is normally used when there is a big number of unknown but mostly cooperative entities that are welcome (a new user to join an online community, a new server on the web, a new software or operating system) as well as some number of uncooperative entities that should be banned. Also, the potential damage from the uncooperative entity should be limited enough.

Blacklisting is also used to exclude one of the two conflicting modules or services so that another could run without interference (like blacklist modulename in Linux modprobe configuration).

A blacklist with expiring entries may also be called a greylist.
